Hilton cuts two
ribbons, receives first guests
 |
| (L to R) Laramie Mayor
Klaus Hanson, Hilton Hotel owner Ron Wilson, and UW
President Tom Buchanan cut the ribbon in the foyer of
the Hilton Garden Inn. In the background are
members of the Chamber Ambassadors. |
Around 150 guests were on hand
to congratulate the Hilton Garden Inn & University of Wyoming
Conference Center on the occasion of its ribbon-cutting this
Monday. Those attending the ceremony included the hotel's
developer and owner Ron Wilson, UW President Tom Buchanan, City
of Laramie Mayor Klaus Hanson, and of course, several
Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors.
  |
| Ron Wilson's parents were
officially the first guests of the Hilton Garden Inn. |
Monday's ceremony actually
featured two ribbon-cuttings: one for the Hilton Garden
Inn Hotel, the other for the University of Wyoming Conference
Center. Guests at the double ribbon-cutting were then
treated to an excellent breakfast featuring smoked salmon and
some absolutely divine crêpes suzette.
 |
| UW President Tom Buchanan
spoke at the second ribbon-cutting, which celebrated the
opening of the UW Conference Center. In the
background can be seen (L to R) Ben Blalock, Ron Wilson,
Yvonne Erickson, and Klaus Hanson. Just out of the
picture are the crêpes suzette. |

And
the cowboy hat and designer cowboy boots were provided
by Martindale’s Western Store located on Grand Avenue,
Historic Downtown Laramie across from the Grand News
Stand.
Anne
Brande, 4th generation Wyoming native and 4th generation

Get ready for business, Laramie!
The following information comes to us from
our friends at the Laramie Area Visitor Center. We
will try to keep you informed of new conferences and
events scheduled at the UW Conference Center. Hopefully
this will enable local businesses to prepare for the influx of
delegates, and Laramie will avoid becoming known as "that town
that ran out of soda...".
February 4, 2008 -- Albany County Businesses:
There will be 600 to 700 educators, students,
families, and arts management attendees for the Kennedy Center
of American College Theater Festival on February 18-22.
The attendees will be from Alaska, Colorado, Washington, Oregon,
Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The Festival will include
activities such as workshops, symposia, and regional-level award
programs and performances. The programs and performances will
be judged and 4 to 6 of the best will be showcased at the annual
National Festival in Washington, D.C.
For more information please visit

Councilor
seeks $2-million for West Laramie
This is a copy of an email sent out
today by Councilor Charles Taulbee. It is reproduced here
with permission.
"I
have sent the following e-mail to Council and staff. Hopefully
we can have some positive feed back. I will keep everyone
informed.
"I would like to thank all Council members for their voiced
support of West Laramie. Dave and Seth did bring up an excellent
point last night. What good does it do to set money aside in a
West Laramie account and do nothing with it? I know I have asked
on numerous occasions to "piggyback" that money onto other
projects so we can get a few feet further, etc. I have been told
numerous times it will not help. Seth made another good comment
last night that staff did not have a plan in place to spend this
money. I find that really alarming that West Laramie has been
annexed for decades and we have nothing in place. In all
fairness to staff I know they are working on updating the
drainage plan which seems to be at the crux of all other
movements forward. But we have also had a drainage study since
1988.
"With the budget process approaching rapidly and the newly
hatched plan to do away with the super majority I would ask
Council if they would be willing to put "their money where their
mouth is " I understand under the current SLIB process Albany
County is slated for approximately $8 million. I know this can
change at the blink of an eye. I also understand that the
County, Rock River, and Centennial have no major plans for this
type of money. I also understand that the SLIB money requires a
50% match. My request would be to authorize staff to place in
the budget an additional $550,000 to go to the West Laramie
fund. This money along with the money from last year ( that does
not have a home) could be leveraged to get an additional $1
million. Now we would be talking $2 million which hopefully
could be used in conjunction with the building of the fire
station to make a real impact. If that $8 million figure holds
perhaps we could do this for West Laramie, build the fire
station and still have money left over for other projects.
"This proposal would go along way in my eyes showing that this
Council is truly trying to have a bi-faction approach to helping
the entire City and is willing to compromise. I would welcome
comments from Council members as well as staff."

Hospice of Laramie's Tree of Memories
is an annual event for anyone to "remember" a loved one or
someone close to them. Beautiful porcelain roses are available
for purchase in memory of someone special you wish to honor or
remember. When you purchase a rose, a medallion with your loved
one's name will be placed on the tree.
Roses, $12.00 each, are still available
through Valentine's Day, and may be purchased at the Hospice
office.
The
mission of Hospice of Laramie is to promote acceptance of the
process of dying as a natural potentially fulfilling part of
life, while providing emotional, spiritual, social, and material
resources to support the dying, their families, and friends.

UW Debate
Team Takes Top Honors in Denver
Jan. 29, 2008 -- The University of Wyoming
debate team earned top honors at the Denver University Mile High
Classic tournament Jan. 25-27. The policy squad took the top
spot in the region among 22 other teams. Jamie Piechura
(Newcastle) and Kelly Nickel (Parker, Colo.) defeated teams from
five other universities to win the championship. Finishing
behind them, Mike Bausch and Tony Johnson (both of Centennial,
Idaho) tied with fellow Cowboys Travis Beach (Castle Rock,
Colo.) and Isaac McBride (Boise, Idaho) in the semifinal
bracket.
Bausch is the latest Cowboy to receive a top
speaker award, receiving first in a division of 44 policy
debaters at the tournament. Piechura received third speaker,
Nickel sixth and Johnson seventh.
"The weekend couldn't have gone much better," says Director of
Forensics Matt Stannard. "I'm just amazed at our depth. We had a
lot of solidarity with teams helping each other out, both by
preparing arguments together and by defeating other teams and
clearing the path for Jamie and Kelly to get an excellent win in
finals."
