Networking@Noon is held the second Wednesday of each month, at the Holiday Inn.  The cost is $12.00 ($15.00 with speaker).

Business After Hours is held the second Thursday of each month, unless otherwise stated.

Cost: $5.00.

For both of these events, it is ESSENTIAL that members RSVP: the Friday before N@N, the Tuesday before BAH. This is so that we can report numbers to caterers, obtain licenses, etc.  We appreciate your cooperation in this.

What is there to see in the Laramie area?

Why would anyone coming through Laramie spend any extra time here?  Is Laramie a good destination for a weekend getaway?  Those of us who live in the Laramie area already know the answers to these questions, but people traveling through might not.  So what can we do about this?  Well, the most obvious answer is to get the word out.

Here at the Chamber of Commerce, we see that as one of our most important functions in the community.  The Chamber office provides a wealth of information to visitors on a daily basis, through maps, guides, relocation packets, and recommendations.  We are asked to provide a staggering range of information: one caller actually wanted to know if Bill Nye Avenue is named for TV celebrity Bill Nye the Science Guy. (And if you're wondering, no it isn't.  The name has much more to do with our local newspaper than with national television.)

When visitors arrive in our town, we figure if we can get them to stay in Laramie an extra two or three hours, the whole community will benefit.  Those visitors will need to eat, they'll want to shop, they may even decide to stay the night.  They'll want to visit some of our excellent museums, wander around our historic downtown, tour the University campus, hike in the Snowys, and maybe swim at the Community Recreation Center.  If we at the Chamber can enable visitors to do some of these things, that's a good thing, right?

Of course, we also have a responsibility to you, our Members.  You can rest assured that, when we're asked to recommend a restaurant, an hotel, a clothing store, an auto repair shop, or any of a thousand other products or services, we always recommend our Members' businesses first.  That's one of the advantages of being a Chamber Member, and it pays dividends day after day, month after month.

To help all of us in answering the questions visitors might ask, there's going to be a tourism seminar at the Wyoming Territorial Prison's Horse Barn Theatre.  The seminar is entitled "Sweet Escape", and aims to provide lots of information, and great ideas for promoting our city to visitors.  All local businesses are encouraged to send a representative, and it will include a tour of the Territorial Prison.  Best of all, it's FREE!

According to the organizer, Lynette Nelson, this two-hour seminar will include "food, information, entertainment, door prizes, and a tour of the prison."  (Lynette, you had me at 'food'...)

Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies needs Your Help

I am writing to you on behalf of Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies and a statewide fund-raising event we are planning in June.  This will be the second year for Eat Out to End Hunger.  This fund-raiser is what I hope will become our signature fund-raising event.  We are an organization that serves virtually every community in Wyoming by delivering food to hunger-relief agencies that are on the front-line of hunger relief.

Eat Out to End Hunger requests that restaurants donate a percentage of their sales on June 3 to Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies to support our efforts to feed those in need in Wyoming.  We sent out invitations to nearly 900 restaurants across the state last month and are hoping we will have at least one restaurant in each community that will join us so that their citizens can participate.

It is sometimes hard to convey that the work we do in Casper affects all counties in the state.  Please check out our website at www.foodbankrockies.org and check out “Wyoming.”  You will find a link in the Wyoming Information that will show you a map that depicts the work we are doing all across Wyoming.

Please let me know if you need more information or need me to answer any questions.  You will also find information about the Eat Out to End Hunger event on our website.

Thank you!

Grand Newsstand II: at least this sequel's as good as the original!

If you're thinking of attending the Hilton's Grand Opening, why not stop by Grand Newsstand II at UW Plaza first?  Owner Mike Scott is sure to make you feel welcome.  "we have lots of books dealing with Wyoming culture, history, and lifestyle," says mike "and if that's not enough, we have over a thousand magazine titles available."  Mike's shiny new shop is a veritable bibliographical cornucopia (and if you're unsure what that means, check out Mike's dictionaries).

And while you're over there at the UW Plaza you might want to check out one of our newest members: Jimmy John's World's Greatest Gourmet sandwiches (2405 Grand Avenue).  Jimmy John's has been in business for about a quarter of a century, so they must be doing something right.  Just a few doors away from Grand Newsstand II, Jimmy John's specializes in delicious, hand-made sandwiches.  I don't know what it is, but they do something magical with the ingredients, and the result is a sandwich you'll wish would never end.  No wonder "your mom wants you to eat at Jimmy John's!"
